Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Can Help Treat Cluster Headaches in Marysville

Marysville chiropractor, Dr. Robert Clarke, understands just how frustrating headaches can be. In addition to being painful, headaches can also impair your ability to read and perform many other work and household-related tasks. Fortunately, the Blair upper cervical technique utilized in his practice is highly effective for relieving pain from many different types of headaches, including cluster headaches. Read on to learn more.

What Are Cluster Headaches?

According to the American Migraine Foundation, cluster headaches typically last anywhere from 15 to 180 minutes and occur in "clusters" of time ranging from every other day to several times per day during a 4-6 week period. This period is followed by a "remission" of symptoms for approximately 6-12 months.

Pain from cluster headaches is described as severe, often "like a hot poker in the eye." It seems to occur on one side of the head, and most commonly affects men between the ages of 20-40. Additional symptoms may include eyelid swelling or drooping, congestion, and restlessness.

How Does The Blair Upper Cervical Technique Help Relieve Headache Pain?

Research suggests that cluster headaches are related to dysfunction of the fifth cranial nerve, which exits the spine in the cervical region. This disruption is often caused or exacerbated by a misalignment in the first two bones of the spine, called the atlas and axis. Such misalignments (also known as vertebral subluxations) can lead to pressure and strain on the brain stem, cranial nerves, and other nearby tissue, which may contribute to cluster headache symptoms.

Since the Blair upper cervical technique focuses exclusively on realigning these bones, an upper cervical chiropractor is able to address the root of the problem by relieving pressure on the fifth cranial nerve and allowing the delicate nervous system to heal and resume normal function. The specific adjustment techniques used with the Blair protocol can help reduce the frequency and severity cluster headache symptoms, giving you much needed pain relief that can last long after an adjustment.
