Multiple Sclerosis Treatment

Multiple Sclerosis Treatment From Our Upper Cervical Chiropractor in Marysville Man feeling pain in the nerves of his back. Suffering from Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is both a common neurological disease, afflicting about 1 million people worldwide, and a dreaded one for its effects on balance, muscle strength, coordination and physical function. MS may cause everything from vision problems and chronic fatigue to muscle spasms and chronic pain. But studies indicate that upper cervical problems may be closely linked to MS development and symptom severity. Our upper cervical chiropractor here at Health First Chiropractic, Dr. Robert Clarke, can administer specialized adjustments to help reduce your symptoms and enhance full body wellness.

The Mechanisms of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) can be thought of as a problem involving the "insulation" of the nerve fibers. The nerve fibers that relay motor and sensory data between brain and body are normally covered with an insulating sheath of a substance called myelin. Sometimes an auto-immune reaction causes the body to attack itself by mistake -- and in the case of multiple sclerosis, the target is myelin. The myelin sheaths become inflamed, impairing normal nerve signaling; once they finally separate from the nerve fibers, they are replaced by scar tissue that blocks signaling altogether. These changes produce symptoms such as:

  • Eye pain or loss of visual acuity
  • Tingling or numbness in the face, body or limbs
  • Debilitating fatigue
  • Balance problems that affect stance and gait
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pain, stiffness and muscle spasms
  • Bladder, bowel or sexual problems
  • Impaired cognition

Specialized Chiropractic Care to Treat MS Symptoms

Medical science has traditionally been puzzled by why some people get MS and others don't. One study, however, discovered that 100 percent of participants had been subjected to previous upper cervical injuries, in some cases many years in the past. Additional research revealed that among MS patients who received upper cervical chiropractic care for their condition, 91 percent reported improvements in their symptoms. It's only logical that a technique known for improving nerve function, balancing disorders and upper cervical issues might produce such a response -- and that’s why we offer this safe, conservative means of MS treatment.

Our upper cervical chiropractor in Marysville uses the Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique to address MS symptoms. This technique can detect small but important alignment deviations in the top two vertebrae of the cervical spine, the axis and atlas vertebrae -- a region uniquely unsupported by ligaments or discs. Delicate adjustments are then made to undo misalignment caused by upper cervical injuries, hopefully reversing the progress of MS symptoms. While this method is not considered a "cure" for MS, it can help sufferers experience better nerve signaling, an essential step toward a higher level of full body wellness.
