Summer Safety: Injury Prevention

Summer Safety: Injury Prevention - Avoiding Neck and Back Pain This Summer With Your Marysville Chiropractor

If you enjoy partaking in outdoor activities during the summer months, then it's important that you also take the necessary steps to avoid injuries that can result in neck and back pain. Here at Health First Chiropractic, we see all-too-often the kinds of spinal problems and injuries that can occur when people don't exercise enough caution while enjoying the great outdoors. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to better protect your back while hiking, camping, and partaking in other outdoor activities this summer.

Hiking

While hiking, it's common to bring along a backpack with supplies such as water, a first-aid kit, and the like. To avoid back and neck pain, however, make sure your backpack is as lightly packed as possible. Only bring the essentials and make pit stops as needed to give your neck and upper back a break. This way, you can avoid excessive strain on your cervical spine and avoid a stiff neck.

Swimming and Biking

While swimming, either in a pool or natural body of water, always look before you dive. Diving in shallow water is a common cause of paralysis and even death. If in doubt, don't dive.

When biking, always wear a helmet, even if it doesn't seem like the "cool" thing to do. The last thing you want is to end up in an accident or collision that could lead to severe head trauma or even a concussion, especially when these injuries can be so easily avoided. And as always, know your limits with any outdoor activity you choose to partake in.
